How close are we to solid state batteries for electric vehicles?

In recent weeks, numerous laboratories have announced significant advancements in solid-state battery technology, which could revolutionize electric vehicles (EVs). These next-generation power sources aim to eliminate the remaining reasons for consumers to choose gasoline vehicles. Solid-state batteries promise to be lighter and more compact than the current lithium-ion cells, enhancing safety by removing flammable materials that can lead to difficult-to-extinguish fires. Moreover, these innovative batteries are expected to hold significantly more energy, potentially allowing EVs to travel four to six hundred miles on a single charge. The days of long recharge times could also be over, with solid-state technology enabling quick fill-ups that rival the speed of traditional gasoline refueling. However, while these advancements sound promising, solid-state EVs are unlikely to hit the market in the immediate future. Experts suggest that tangible prototypes may not appear until 2027, with large-scale production targeted for around 2030. Jun Liu, a materials scientist at the University of Washington and director of the Battery500 Consortium, highlights that the feasibility of solid-state batteries has already been established in laboratories worldwide. The main hurdle now lies in scaling up production while keeping costs manageable. Eric McCalla, a battery materials researcher at McGill University, notes that the rapid progress in battery technology, once deemed implausible, is now becoming a reality. As the industry navigates these challenges, the vision for solid-state batteries as a cornerstone of future electric mobility is becoming increasingly attainable.
