AI won't cook coding jobs, Netflix engineer says

In an era where artificial intelligence is transforming the tech landscape, many fear for the future of software engineering jobs. However, Anthony Goto, a seasoned engineer at Netflix, reassures recent graduates that the rise of AI does not spell doom for their career prospects. In a recent TikTok video, he expressed optimism about the evolving tech environment, stating, "Our demand for enhanced functionality and diverse applications will only continue to grow." Goto, who has amassed 15 years of experience at companies like Netflix and Uber, frequently encounters concerns from new graduates regarding the impact of AI on their careers. He emphasizes that AI serves as an additional abstraction layer in programming, not a replacement for engineers. This perspective is particularly relevant for those preparing for interviews at leading tech firms like Netflix. He points out that to remain competitive in the future job market, new engineers should focus on mastering System Design. Goto believes that understanding this discipline will be critical, as it may become a vital tool in their arsenal. "I'm committed to helping newer engineers grasp System Design," he noted. Drawing parallels with the video game industry, Goto highlights how technological advancements have reshaped the field since the release of Doom in 1993. The gaming sector has evolved into a $100 billion industry that often collaborates with Hollywood for major productions. He recalls a hypothetical conversation with John Carmack, the lead programmer of Doom, who might be astonished at today's sophisticated game engines that streamline game development. Last year, Carmack remarked on how modern software development has rendered much of his early work obsolete, comparing it to the maintenance of chariot wheels. Goto acknowledges that while his predictions about the future of engineering could be off-base, the historical trajectory of technology suggests a persistent demand for engineers. He asserts, "We've witnessed this trend repeatedly: as we create powerful abstractions, we also democratize technology, making it accessible to more people."
