Google court filings suggest Google’s ChromeOS has an expiration date

Sixteen years ago, Google introduced Chromebooks to the world with the limited release of the Cr-48, a simple and compact laptop given away to select users. Since then, Chromebooks have become a staple in budget computing, widely adopted in schools and businesses alike. Recent court documents have revealed that Google plans to transition its focus to Android PCs, indicating that Chromebooks may only be viable until 2034. This information surfaced during ongoing antitrust litigation against Google, which began in 2020 and was adjudicated in 2024. As Google appeals a guilty verdict from the trial, it appears that the company has successfully avoided many of the remedies sought by government prosecutors. The filings, reported by The Verge, shed light on Google's strategy for its upcoming Android-based devices, codenamed Aluminium. Google's Android chief, Sameer Samat, previously indicated that the first Aluminium devices are expected to launch in 2026. The new documents suggest that trusted testers could get their hands on these devices by late 2026, while a broader retail launch may not occur until 2028. With the anticipated rise of Aluminium, Google envisions this new platform replacing ChromeOS in enterprise and educational settings, signaling a significant shift for the Chromebook lineup. Historically, outside of a brief surge during the pandemic when demand for affordable home devices spiked, Chromebooks have struggled to branch out beyond their primary markets.
