The AI talent wars have come for the interns

In the escalating race to advance artificial intelligence, internships have taken on a new significance, transforming from simple entry-level positions into highly coveted roles that offer salaries rivaling those of full-time jobs in other sectors. Tech giants are fiercely competing to attract talent, with substantial financial packages that reflect the growing demand for expertise in this field. Companies like Meta and Google have made headlines with their aggressive hiring strategies. In a significant move, Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI, an acquisition viewed as a means to secure top talent, specifically targeting CEO Alexandr Wang. Similarly, Google’s acquisition of Windsurf’s leading talent for $2.4 billion underscores the lengths to which these organizations will go to secure skilled professionals. The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, revealed that Meta attempted to entice employees with signing bonuses as high as $100 million, a strategy that was reportedly matched by OpenAI's Andrew Bosworth. Even at smaller startups, AI professionals can command salaries between $300,000 and $400,000, highlighting the intense competition for expertise in this burgeoning field. In addition to vying for established talent, major AI firms are investing heavily in nurturing new talent through various internship and residency programs. Business Insider has compiled a list of some of the most rewarding internships available in 2026 at organizations like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Meta. For instance, the Anthropic AI Safety Fellows Program offers a four-month, full-time fellowship that aims to accelerate research in AI safety. Participants receive a stipend of $3,850 per week and have access to substantial compute funding, along with mentorship from leading AI researchers. OpenAI's Residency program, lasting six months, immerses participants in full-time roles, allowing them to collaborate on cutting-edge AI projects. Residents earn $18,300 monthly and gain valuable experience that could lead to permanent positions within the organization. Google is also on the lookout for talent through its Student Researcher Program, which offers flexible research roles for Ph.D. students. This initiative not only targets candidates in the U.S. but also provides competitive salaries ranging from $113,000 to $150,000 based on experience and location. Meta, on the other hand, is offering various research internships with compensation that can exceed $12,000 a month, depending on the candidate's experience and the nature of the research. As these tech giants continue to innovate and expand their AI capabilities, the quest for the brightest minds in artificial intelligence is expected to intensify, making internships not just a stepping stone, but a lucrative opportunity for aspiring professionals in the field.
