The iPhone Air is so light, I forgot it was in my pocket

Having tested the iPhone Air for ten days, I can confirm it truly lives up to the buzz about its remarkable lightness and slim profile. However, the real question remains: is this ultra-thin device, measuring just 5.64 millimeters, worth the sacrifices it requires? After using the iPhone 15 Pro Max as my primary device for over a year and a half, I’ve become accustomed to a heavier feel. Transitioning to the iPhone Air made the Pro Max feel surprisingly weighty in comparison, highlighting Apple’s impressive engineering feat. Friends who have tried the iPhone Air rave about its exquisite design and lightweight feel, which is only slightly less than the iPhone 17. I find myself often picking it up just to savor that sensation again. While the novelty may fade, for now, it’s a delightful experience. Despite its thinness, the iPhone Air isn’t diminutive; it boasts a 6.5-inch screen that makes it user-friendly, although one-handed operation may still be a challenge for those used to smaller devices. It’s easy to forget the phone is in your pocket, making it a comfortable fit for those who struggle with bulkier models. In terms of durability, the iPhone Air holds its own. It survived a fall from my bedside table and even a mishap where I accidentally sat on it, returning to its original shape without issues. Numerous videos demonstrate its resilience in everyday situations. While I typically avoid cases to maintain its sleekness, a case may be necessary if you plan to use Apple’s new shoulder strap, though the bumper case provides protection without adding significant weight. Battery life has been a topic of concern given the phone’s slim design. After engaging in intensive gaming or streaming, I noticed the device tends to heat up, particularly around the camera area, prompting me to check the battery level more frequently. Although it has the power to handle graphic-intensive games, purchasing Apple’s $99 MagSafe battery pack is advisable for heavy users, as it can easily extend battery life throughout the day—plus, it can recharge compatible AirPods. For light tasks like calls, video watching, and scrolling through social media, the iPhone Air performs adequately. I took it on a two-hour flight to watch a downloaded Netflix movie, and the battery level remained stable. However, being a new device, battery performance may decline over time, which could be a concern for long-term users. The camera is another area where the iPhone Air shows limitations. Its single-lens rear camera features a 48-megapixel sensor similar to the base iPhone 17, but lacks a dedicated telephoto lens, forcing users to crop from the main sensor for zoomed shots. While the main camera captures decent details, background brightness often exceeds what one would perceive naturally. This was a disappointment for me, especially as a pet owner who enjoys capturing candid moments without moving closer. On the bright side, the new 18-megapixel front camera allows for creative selfies and automatically adjusts for group shots, thanks to the Center Stage feature. The ability to shoot videos using both front and back cameras simultaneously is also a notable addition for content creators. However, the Air’s single top speaker may disappoint those who prefer immersive sound, especially during gaming or video playback without headphones. While Apple has successfully crafted an aesthetically pleasing phone, the challenge lies in convincing consumers to choose the iPhone Air over other models. Positioned as the latest addition to Apple’s lineup, it aims to outperform its predecessors, the Mini and Plus. However, the question remains: who is the ideal user for this phone? As I shared with a friend, the iPhone Air feels like a “vibe phone”—a device defined more by its style than functionality. If you value design and portability over all-day battery life or advanced photography capabilities, the iPhone Air may be your perfect match. Otherwise, exploring the rest of the iPhone range might be more suitable for your needs.
