Farewell, Jeeves: Ask.com shuts down

In a significant move marking the conclusion of its long-standing history, Ask.com has officially ceased operations. The platform, originally launched as Ask Jeeves in 1996, was known for its innovative approach to answering questions in a conversational style, making it a forerunner to modern AI chatbots. Despite its early promise, Ask.com struggled to compete with dominant search engines, particularly Google, throughout its three decades of existence. After being acquired by IAC in 2005, the company rebranded by dropping the 'Jeeves' name and shifted its focus primarily towards Q&A services by 2010. At that time, IAC Chairman Barry Diller acknowledged the site's challenges, admitting it was not competitive with Google and lacked significant value in the company’s stock portfolio. Recently, a statement on Ask.com’s website announced the termination of its search operations, effective May 1, 2026. The message reflects IAC's intention to concentrate its efforts elsewhere, stating, "As IAC continues to sharpen its focus, we have made the decision to discontinue our search business, which includes Ask.com." While the platform may be shutting down, it leaves behind a legacy that highlights the evolution of digital search and information retrieval. The website's closing note declares, "Jeeves’ spirit endures," a nod to the iconic character that once defined its identity.
