BYD has caught up with Tesla in the global EV race. Here’s how.

In the summer of 2022, BYD executive Lian Yubo expressed admiration for Tesla, highlighting Elon Musk as a role model for Chinese automakers. "Tesla is a very successful company no matter what. BYD respects Tesla and we admire Tesla," he stated during a conversation with Chinese state media. Fast forward three years, and the competitive landscape has shifted significantly. Tesla's technological advantage over its Chinese counterparts has diminished considerably. The American automaker is now grappling with declining sales in key markets, while its ambitious plans for fully autonomous vehicles face increasing regulatory hurdles. Once dismissive of BYD as a viable competitor, Musk returned from a visit to China with a sobering realization about the advancements made by BYD. A former Tesla executive revealed that Musk recognized the efficiency of BYD’s factories and their technological prowess, leading him to conclude that China is gaining ground in the electric vehicle sector. As Tesla struggles with sales amid Musk’s political engagements and a lack of new model releases, BYD has surged ahead, claiming the title of the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer. In 2024, BYD achieved annual revenues exceeding $100 billion for the first time. The ongoing transition towards autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence is intensifying this rivalry. According to Barclays analyst Dan Levy, while Tesla maintains a stronghold in the Western market with its software-defined vehicles, the situation in China is markedly different. "Tesla's technological edge is not as pronounced, if it exists at all," he noted, emphasizing the shifting dynamics in the global EV race.
