What happens the day after superintelligence?

The recent launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT-5 marks a significant leap towards the emergence of artificial superintelligence (ASI), a form of AI that could surpass human cognitive abilities across various domains. As we approach this pivotal moment, concerns about the societal repercussions are mounting, and they may not align with common fears. Most individuals express anxiety about potential disruptions in employment, the rise of deepfakes, and the concentration of power among a few dominant AI companies. However, few have contemplated the lived experience of a world where superintelligence is commonplace. ASI is defined as systems capable of outperforming humans in reasoning, problem-solving, strategic thinking, and creativity. These algorithms could solve intricate challenges in mere moments, a task that would ordinarily consume the time of human experts. What troubles me is not the apocalyptic scenarios typically discussed, but rather the risks associated with a benevolent ASI. While such an intelligence could bring about many societal benefits, it could also deeply challenge our human identity. Imagine a reality where we acknowledge that there exists a superior intelligence—one that is more adept and insightful than our own minds. In this new paradigm, how will we respond? Will we instinctively consult our AI companions for guidance on every minor issue? Or worse, will we come to rely on them more than our own judgment? Traditionally, our engagement with AI has involved a Socratic method of inquiry—asking questions to elicit responses. Yet, as we approach a new era, AI will be seamlessly integrated into wearable devices that will not require us to ask anything. These devices will be equipped with sensors to perceive our surroundings and offer real-time advice before we even think to seek it. This concept, which I term 'augmented mentality,' is poised to transform society as AI-powered eyewear, earbuds, and accessories become commonplace. This shift represents the next wave of mobile computing and has ignited a competitive race among tech giants like Meta, Google, Samsung, and Apple to create context-aware AI devices that could replace traditional smartphones. Picture yourself walking down the street and encountering a colleague whose name momentarily escapes you. Your AI assistant recognizes your hesitation and gently reminds you of their name. It might even suggest a conversation starter regarding their recent personal experiences. While this level of assistance could enhance social interactions, it raises questions about human agency. Are we genuinely connecting with others, or merely engaging through the filter of AI guidance? As we adopt body-worn AI assistants, they might initially empower us, making us feel more competent. Yet, there is a risk that such technologies could erode our self-confidence and sense of agency. Human intelligence is a hallmark of our species, and the prospect of relying on AI for cognitive support could lead to a diminished sense of personal significance. As someone who has dedicated their career to enhancing human capabilities through technology, I recognize the potential for great advancements. However, with the advent of superintelligence, we must tread carefully. The line between augmenting human potential and replacing it is tenuous, and we must be deliberate in our approach to deploying these powerful systems to ensure they enhance rather than diminish our humanity.
