LAS VEGAS—In the high-octane world of Formula 1, the engines may roar, but it’s the data that truly drives the teams. As the sport evolves, the reliance on data has become more pronounced, with teams like Red Bull Racing leveraging technology to maintain their competitive edge. While the cars may appear similar at first glance—with their exposed wheels and distinctive wings—the underlying technology has undergone significant transformations. The hybrid powertrains, featuring 1.6 L turbocharged V6 engines, continue to recover energy from both the rear wheels during braking and from the exhaust gases. However, the methods by which these cars generate aerodynamic grip have shifted dramatically, now relying more on ground effect from intricately designed undercarriages rather than solely on traditional wing structures. The landscape of F1 has also changed from a financial perspective. With a strict cost cap of $140 million imposed, teams are now required to be strategic in their spending. Morgan Maia, senior partnerships manager with Oracle Red Bull Racing, emphasized the importance of this cap, stating, “We have to ensure that we don’t overspend, as all our partnerships, including those with AT&T, are part of this budget.” AT&T, which has been collaborating with Red Bull for over a decade, has intensified its role, establishing a connection between the garage and a command center located at their UK factory. This setup allows for a broader array of insights and expertise to tackle challenges, far beyond the 60 personnel limits imposed for each race. As F1 gains immense popularity, particularly in the United States, the sport is transforming into a thrilling spectacle, akin to a 200 mph soap opera. With 24 episodes each season, the combination of engineering prowess and data analytics makes for a riveting experience both on and off the track.
