In 1994, George W. Maschke sought a position with the FBI, having already held a security clearance for over a decade. His trustworthy reputation, built during his Army career, seemed solid. However, a routine polygraph test would soon cast doubt on his integrity. By the spring of 1995, Maschke found himself facing an FBI polygraph examiner, responding to questions regarding his life and loyalties. Despite his honest answers, the examiner claimed that the physiological responses recorded by the machine suggested he was being deceptive about his handling of classified information and connections with foreign intelligence. "My entire career prospects were basically shattered," Maschke recalled. Confounded by the discrepancy between his honesty and the machine’s assertions, he felt compelled to seek answers. This quest for understanding led him to delve into research about polygraphs and their methodologies, especially after experiencing another negative polygraph result. His efforts ultimately culminated in the creation of AntiPolygraph.org, a platform designed to provide resources and support to others who have faced similar situations. "When I had my polygraph experience, I had no one to talk to," Maschke reflected, now working as a legal translator in the Netherlands. Through his website, he aims to ensure that others do not feel isolated in their struggles. Visitors to the site can access an e-book detailing the intricacies of polygraph testing, personal accounts from individuals affected by test outcomes, government documents on polygraph usage, and information on related litigation. Maschke's work continues to shed light on the contentious nature of polygraph examinations and advocates for better alternatives.
