A 29-year-old VC founder sparked a debate after posting about a 7-day workweek. He shared his philosophy with us.

Harry Stebbings, the 29-year-old founder of 20VC, ignited a heated discussion online after advocating for a seven-day workweek in a recent LinkedIn post. He asserted that such an intense schedule is essential for aspiring entrepreneurs aiming to create a $10 billion enterprise. Stebbings clarified that while building a successful business is commendable, it doesn't necessitate a relentless work ethic. He emphasized, however, that for those who are truly committed to scaling a massive venture, unwavering dedication is crucial. His remarks have drawn parallels to China's controversial 996 work culture — a schedule requiring employees to work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week. Despite being outlawed by the Chinese government in 2021, reports suggest that this grueling practice persists in some organizations, raising concerns about employee well-being and even fatalities. Stebbings noted that most criticism of his views originated from European workers, while many Americans seemed to accept the idea of a seven-day workweek as a given. He acknowledged the importance of understanding personal limits and maintaining energy levels, encouraging his team to integrate stress-relief practices into their routines, such as exercising during lunch breaks. His own regimen includes morning workouts and walking meetings in London’s Hyde Park, which allows him to achieve an impressive 30,000 steps daily. Despite his vigorous work habits, which see him typically working until 1 a.m., Stebbings advocates for taking breaks and vacations. In the past 11 years, he has only managed two short getaways within the UK. He believes that hunger can enhance alertness, stating, "When your brain is starved, you're much more alert." Stebbings' employees seem to resonate with his work-centric philosophy, often remaining in the office well after hours. He attributes their satisfaction to being well-compensated and engaged in meaningful work. He suggests that a positive work environment and the thrill of success contribute significantly to overall happiness. Nevertheless, Stebbings cautions against sustaining such an intense pace indefinitely. He believes that while relentless effort is vital in the initial years of a startup, individuals can find a more balanced approach after establishing efficient work processes. He underscores the urgency of productivity, asserting, "We are in a global war for efficiency and data," making it clear that for those intent on building billion-dollar businesses, short-term sacrifices may be necessary.
