For instance, Axiom, a startup supported by $64 million in seed funding and co-founded by former Meta researcher Carina Hong, is dedicated to developing specialized AI for advanced mathematics. Similarly, Google DeepMind has created AlphaGenome, a system that analyzes how DNA variants influence various biological processes. There is a growing demand for smaller, more efficient AI models, according to Aidan Gomez, CEO of Cohere, a company focused on enterprise AI technology. Gomez highlighted the importance of enhancing these models with quality data and algorithms rather than merely increasing their scale. Steinberger’s perspective is not isolated; voices like Timnit Gebru, a prominent computer scientist and founder of the Distributed AI Research Institute, also challenge the notion of AGI. In a video discussion, Gebru described AGI as a fictional construct, stressing the importance of creating well-defined, testable systems. She expressed concern that chasing an elusive 'machine god' could lead the industry toward greater labor exploitation and environmental harm.
