Review:The Boroughsis a smart, pitch-perfect creature feature

The Duffer brothers, known for their hit series Stranger Things, have transitioned from Netflix to a new lucrative partnership with Paramount. However, they still have a couple of projects under the Netflix banner, including the animated series Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 and the recently launched supernatural thriller, The Boroughs. Set in a retirement community located in the New Mexico desert, The Boroughs has been well-received, showcasing a clever script, a strong ensemble cast, and a captivating central mystery. At the heart of the story is Sam Cooper, portrayed by Alfred Molina, a widowed former aeronautical engineer who finds himself reluctantly moving into The Boroughs. The move was his late wife Lilly's decision, and he feels trapped by the contract he signed with her. His initial grumpiness affects his relationships, especially with his daughter Claire, played by Jena Malone, and others around him. Things start to change for Sam when he meets his neighbor, Jack, played by Bill Pullman. Jack's infectious good spirit and kindness quickly earn him a place in the hearts of the community, particularly among the women. As Sam gets to know Jack's friends, including Art and Judy, portrayed by Clarke Peters and Alfre Woodard, and retired doctor Wally, played by Denis O’Hare, who faces his own health battles, he begins to reconsider his situation. Despite a frightening encounter with a former resident, Edward, who is consumed by dementia and claims there’s an “owl in the walls,” Sam decides to remain in the community. The Boroughs promises to deliver a mix of humor, drama, and suspense, making it a compelling watch for those intrigued by supernatural tales set against the backdrop of everyday life.
