Elon Musk's The Boring Company is currently conducting tests of Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system within its tunnels linking Las Vegas' Convention Center to nearby hotels, as reported by Fortune. According to Steve Hill, the CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, testing has been underway for several months, with Tesla vehicles only having safety drivers present during these trials. Although the tunnels have been operational for nearly four years, and plans for expansion throughout Las Vegas are in the works, their current function remains limited to a small area around the Convention Center. While Tesla has recently launched a limited robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, and a similar ride-hailing initiative in San Francisco, Hill emphasized that safety drivers still need to intervene occasionally, indicating that full autonomy is not yet achieved. The straightforward design of the tunnels should theoretically be manageable for Tesla’s autonomous driving software. However, challenges arise from the need to navigate passenger pick-up and drop-off points at various underground stations. Hill noted that the vibrant lighting and the semi-smooth rock walls within The Boring Company's tunnels have posed additional difficulties for the system, as the vehicles seek out optimal stopping spots that can sometimes be tricky to locate.
