Figma CEO says job titles are merging thanks to AI — and everyone is a 'product builder'

Dylan Field, the co-founder and CEO of Figma, has observed a fascinating trend in the workplace: the traditional distinctions between job titles are fading away. In a recent appearance on 'Lenny's Podcast,' Field discussed how designers, engineers, and researchers are increasingly stepping into each other's domains as they adapt to the evolving demands of the industry. Having guided Figma from its inception to a publicly traded company with over 1,600 employees, Field noted that many team members are now exploring roles outside their original expertise. He highlighted that artificial intelligence is a significant factor in this shift, making distinct job titles less relevant. 'We’re seeing more designers, engineers, product managers, and researchers all engaging with one another's responsibilities,' he explained. Field also pointed to a notable trend over the past five years, suggesting that this blending of roles will only intensify in the coming years. In a survey conducted by Figma, 72% of respondents identified AI tools as a primary reason behind the diversification of job functions. 'AI is encouraging everyone to adopt a more generalist approach,' he remarked. As AI technology evolves, it is pushing employees beyond their traditional career boundaries. Tasks that once required extensive coding skills are now accessible through simplified tools, allowing non-engineers to tackle more technical challenges. Employers are increasingly focused on upskilling their teams to keep pace with these changes. Figma's survey revealed that 56% of non-designers are now heavily involved in design-related tasks, a rise from 44% the previous year. Interestingly, 53% of respondents acknowledged that a deep understanding is still crucial for executing tasks effectively, even with AI's assistance. Field found this statistic revealing, as it underscores a growing inclination towards versatile skill sets in the workforce. When asked for his key takeaway, he stated, 'We are all product builders, and while some of us have specialized skills, the landscape is changing for everyone.'
