2026 Mercedes CLA first drive: Entry level doesn’t mean basic

SAN FRANCISCO—As the automotive industry advances towards electrification, manufacturers are increasingly seeking to blend cutting-edge technology with familiar aesthetics. Electric vehicles (EVs) often come with futuristic designs, but Mercedes-Benz is taking a different approach with its latest model, the all-electric CLA. Unlike previous models like the EQS and EQE, which sported unconventional shapes reminiscent of soap bars, the CLA embraces a more traditional look that appeals to the average consumer. This strategic decision is crucial for attracting a broader audience in a market eager for EVs. Beneath its elegant exterior, the CLA is packed with innovative technology, featuring a modern electric powertrain that powers its wheels via a network of four advanced computers. And yes, artificial intelligence is part of the package. The CLA introduces a new series for Mercedes, built on a versatile modular architecture that will support upcoming hybrid versions as well. However, the spotlight is currently on the battery electric vehicle (BEV) variant, which showcases technology derived from the EQXX concept car. While the EQXX was a unique prototype able to achieve approximately 750 miles (1,207 km) on a single charge, the CLA offers a practical range of up to 374 miles thanks to its 85 kWh usable battery. The CLA maintains a commitment to efficiency, steering clear of the trend of oversized wheels that can negatively impact aerodynamics. With wheel sizes ranging from 17 to 19 inches, the CLA minimizes drag while still delivering a sleek profile. Impressively, despite its stylish design, the car boasts a remarkable drag coefficient of 0.21, underscoring its aerodynamic efficiency. In summary, the new Mercedes CLA not only marks a significant step in the company’s electric journey but also exemplifies a perfect blend of style, technology, and practicality, making it an exciting option for both EV enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike.
