AI is changing the internet forever. Here’s how

Google is currently undergoing significant changes to its long-standing search engine to adapt to the evolving needs of users. According to Robby Stein, Google's vice president of product for Search, users are now making more complex queries that lack straightforward answers on the internet. At a recent conference, Google unveiled new features that allow the search engine to create custom visuals, interactive graphics, and mini-apps directly on the search page. This innovation is part of a broader trend where artificial intelligence is reshaping the ways we interact with information across various platforms including social media, online shopping, and more. As users increasingly opt for longer, more detailed search terms over traditional keywords, many are beginning their inquiries within AI applications like ChatGPT. This shift is also reflected in the rise of AI-generated influencers on social media, raising questions about authenticity and engagement. Despite concerns about the implications of AI on employment and safety, experts suggest that AI has permeated daily online activities so thoroughly that it has become an integral part of modern life. Stein highlighted that the upcoming update is the most significant enhancement to Google's search functionality in a quarter-century. The new search interface is designed to accommodate longer queries and facilitate the inclusion of various media types, such as images and browser tabs. This is aimed at streamlining the search process, enabling users to accomplish their tasks more efficiently. Notably, searches utilizing AI Mode, which allows for more interactive queries, have surged, with a reported increase of over 100% each quarter since its launch. Queries in this mode are also significantly longer than standard searches. Data from Semrush indicates a growing trend where users are adopting conversational styles similar to those used when interacting with AI models like ChatGPT. Interestingly, while the median search query remains relatively short at three words, there is a noticeable increase in longer queries, particularly those consisting of five to ten words. This change in behavior started before the introduction of ChatGPT but has accelerated since. The relationship between traditional search engines and AI applications is complex. Research shows that over 20% of traffic from ChatGPT is directed to Google, as users utilize the strengths of both platforms for different purposes. Google is primarily used for direct inquiries, while ChatGPT serves as a tool for summarizing information and making comparisons. AI's influence extends beyond search engines into the realm of social media. Take Aitana Lopez, an AI-generated persona who has amassed a significant following by mimicking the lifestyle of a traditional influencer. Marketers are increasingly investing in AI-generated content, as it provides a cost-effective alternative to human influencers and can be tailored for specific campaigns. Tech companies are keen to further integrate AI into social media platforms. For example, Meta is incorporating its Muse Spark model into well-known apps, while Google has introduced a new AI model called Gemini Omni, designed to create realistic avatars. E-commerce is also being transformed by AI, with Adobe reporting a staggering 393% year-over-year increase in traffic to retail sites from AI services. Google has launched a new universal shopping cart feature, and Amazon is enhancing its shopping assistant capabilities. Despite these advancements, Stein emphasizes the continued importance of quality content produced by humans, suggesting that while AI can provide immediate answers, there remains a demand for well-crafted websites. While firms may notice a decrease in web traffic, the quality of remaining visitors appears to be higher, leading to increased engagement in terms of purchases and service requests. The future of online searching and shopping is undoubtedly set for further evolution, compelling users and businesses alike to adapt to these rapid changes.
