OpenAI's president says AI has gone from writing 20% to '80% of your code'

The influence of artificial intelligence in software development is escalating at an unprecedented pace. During a recent discussion hosted by Sequoia Capital, Greg Brockman, the president of OpenAI, revealed that AI tools have made a significant leap in their coding capabilities. He stated that these advanced tools have evolved from composing just 20% of the code to now handling a remarkable 80%. Brockman highlighted that this transformation signifies a shift in the role of AI from being merely a supplementary resource for developers to becoming a central player in the coding process. He urged tech founders to fully embrace these advancements, noting that OpenAI’s Codex platform is no longer limited to seasoned software engineers but is designed to assist anyone engaged with computers. While the integration of AI in coding is promising, Brockman emphasized the importance of human oversight. He noted that OpenAI ensures that all code merged into projects is subject to human review, advocating for a balanced approach to utilizing AI-generated code. He stressed that blindly relying on AI or completely rejecting it both present their own challenges. This trend is echoed by other tech giants. Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently shared that AI now accounts for 75% of the new code produced internally, a significant increase from just 25% in 2024. Similarly, Meta anticipates that a majority of its engineers will rely heavily on AI for code generation in the near future. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, predicts that the rate of AI-generated code will continue to soar, projecting that within a year, AI could be responsible for virtually all coding tasks. In a recent blog post, he remarked on the profound impact AI is having at Anthropic, accelerating the development of next-generation AI systems at an extraordinary rate.
