This AI pioneer says AI could replace almost every job — even CEOs

In a future shaped by artificial intelligence, the landscape of employment could undergo a dramatic transformation, potentially leaving a significant portion of the workforce behind. Stuart Russell, a renowned AI expert and co-author of the seminal textbook "Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach," warns that we may soon face an unprecedented crisis of job displacement that governments are unprepared for. Speaking on the "Diary of a CEO" podcast with British entrepreneur Steven Bartlett, Russell expressed deep concern over the accelerating capabilities of AI systems. He stated that political leaders may soon confront a staggering reality: the prospect of 80% unemployment is no longer a distant sci-fi fantasy. According to Russell, AI is poised to take over tasks traditionally performed by humans, even in high-skill professions. He elaborated that roles once considered secure, such as surgeons, drivers, accountants, and software engineers, could be automated with remarkable speed. "It takes the robot seven seconds to learn how to be a surgeon that’s better than any human being," he remarked, highlighting the rapid advancements in AI technology. Russell's views resonate with a growing number of industry experts and tech leaders who predict significant job losses due to automation. While political figures like Andrew Yang have warned that AI could eliminate millions of jobs in the U.S. within the next decade, CEO predictions from companies like Anthropic and Nvidia suggest that a considerable portion of entry-level positions may vanish within five years. Interestingly, Russell pointed out that even top executives could face redundancy. He painted a scenario in which boards of directors might pressure CEOs to relinquish their decision-making authority to AI systems or risk losing their jobs to competitors who have embraced AI-driven leadership. This sentiment was echoed by leaders such as Google CEO Sundar Pichai and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who believe that the responsibilities of a CEO could eventually be more easily handled by AI. The impact of AI on employment is already being felt, with major companies like HP, IBM, Salesforce, and Klarna citing AI as a reason for workforce reductions in recent layoffs. Russell suggested that the long-term future of AI may lead to fewer human employees even within leading tech firms. However, Russell also emphasized a crucial psychological challenge. If AI takes over all productive tasks, society may shift toward a model where humans exist merely as passive consumers, potentially losing the drive and purpose that comes from meaningful work. He stressed the importance of envisioning a future where education and human incentives evolve alongside AI advancements, as no one has yet adequately envisioned what that future might look like. As we stand on the brink of this technological revolution, it becomes increasingly clear that discussions surrounding AI's impact on work, purpose, and society are more critical than ever.
