As the world becomes increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence, those in their 30s may find themselves at a disadvantage. Caitlin Kalinowski, who previously led robotics at OpenAI, emphasized this point during a recent episode of "Lenny's" podcast. She noted that the current generation of engineers in their early 20s are the true 'AI natives,' having grown up with AI as an integral part of their problem-solving processes. Kalinowski explained that young engineers are utilizing AI tools so seamlessly that it feels like a second nature to them. This foundational experience allows them to tackle challenges more efficiently and innovatively. "It's challenging to find individuals in their 30s who can claim to be fully AI native," she remarked. She highlights how this generational divide is reshaping the tech landscape, necessitating a shift in how older workers approach technology. The need for younger professionals to guide their older counterparts is becoming increasingly apparent. Kalinowski pointed out that younger engineers are not just adapting to AI; they are leveraging it from the ground up, which grants them a speed and agility that many older workers lack. This dynamic is also echoed by other tech leaders, such as Reddit's Steve Huffman and LinkedIn's Reid Hoffman, who agree that those who grew up with AI tools have a distinct edge in the workplace. In response to this shift, companies like Meta are encouraging their employees to become more 'AI-native' by integrating AI tools into everyday tasks and coding practices. However, Kalinowski also addressed concerns regarding the potential threat AI poses to entry-level positions in tech. While some fear that automation may eliminate junior roles, she argues that the future will likely consist of smaller, yet still essential teams. Drawing a parallel with early internet adopters, Kalinowski concluded that older tech workers must acknowledge that they are not native to these new technologies and adapt accordingly. The evolution of AI in the workplace is not just about survival; it's about learning from the new generation that is redefining the way technology is utilized.
