A new scorecard shows which software companies will win or lose in AI

A recent study from consulting firm AlixPartners reveals a significant shift in the enterprise software landscape, driven by the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). This transformation, referred to as the 'SaaSpocalypse,' suggests that the current challenges within the software sector are not merely temporary but represent a fundamental change that could severely impact private-equity investments. The analysis evaluated 500 software companies across 12 private-equity portfolios and developed an 'AI Disruption Score' to identify which businesses are most vulnerable to AI advancements and which are better protected. Instead of focusing on individual companies, AlixPartners categorized software subsectors and business models based on two critical factors: the quality of data and vertical specialization. These elements are becoming essential indicators of resilience as AI threatens to standardize and commoditize traditional software solutions. AlixPartners has been proactive in recognizing the potential risks posed by AI to the software industry, having identified this threat over a year ago, well ahead of many investors and analysts. Their scoring system ranks companies on a scale of 1 to 7, with higher scores indicating greater susceptibility to disruption. Businesses that effectively leverage proprietary data and operate within specialized verticals are deemed to have a lower risk of being affected by AI, while those lacking these advantages are positioned in the highest-risk category, potentially facing consolidation and structural challenges. The findings are striking. Only about 14% of the companies analyzed demonstrate robust protective measures across both dimensions, while nearly 25% are left exposed on both fronts, making them particularly vulnerable as AI-native competitors emerge. Categories at high risk include marketing automation, generic productivity tools, and analytics platforms, where AI can easily replicate functionalities such as reporting and customer engagement. These areas typically represent 'point solutions' with minimal switching costs and proprietary data, making them prime targets for disruption. Conversely, software solutions embedded in regulated environments—such as those for payments, healthcare systems, and cybersecurity—tend to fare better against disruption. These sectors benefit from stringent compliance requirements and mission-critical workflows, creating significant barriers for new entrants. AlixPartners highlights a spectrum of risk, with some companies falling into a middle ground. This includes system-of-record providers that manage essential data across various industries, as well as specialized SaaS platforms that may face less regulation. However, not all record systems are equally secure; even historically robust enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems now only possess medium-strength defensive measures, indicating that they too could be affected as AI capabilities continue to evolve. The looming debt crisis adds another layer of complexity. Software companies, which have enjoyed stable subscription-based revenues, are facing a potential $40 billion debt refinancing wall by 2028, coinciding with the anticipated impacts of AI on business models. AlixPartners predicts that lenders may increase interest rates for these companies by approximately 50 basis points, reflecting the heightened risks associated with AI disruption. If lenders adjust rates to mirror market conditions more accurately, the consequences could be severe, potentially overwhelming many businesses. As the software industry grapples with these changes, AlixPartners forecasts a decline in SaaS revenues, predicting a drop of up to 15% within the next year and 25% to 35% over three years in certain segments. The firm categorizes companies into four groups: 'fortress' businesses with strong defenses, 'survivors' needing to enhance their AI capabilities, firms likely to be acquired by AI-native entities, and those that may face closure. This analysis underscores a pivotal moment for the software sector, marking the end of an era defined by reckless growth, while AI accelerates the divide between resilient platforms and those at risk of obsolescence.
