Texas Instruments to invest more than $60 billion to make semiconductors in the US

Texas Instruments has announced a monumental investment exceeding $60 billion aimed at bolstering semiconductor manufacturing within the United States. This initiative comes as part of ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to encourage major tech companies, such as Apple and Samsung, to produce their products domestically. The colossal investment will fund the establishment of seven semiconductor fabrication facilities across Texas and Utah, which is expected to generate over 60,000 jobs. Texas Instruments is collaborating with the current administration to enhance domestic production of essential chips that are integral to a wide range of technologies, from smartphones to data centers and automobiles. This move aligns with the White House's strategy to maintain U.S. supremacy in the technology sector, particularly in the face of competition from China. Texas Instruments, which has partnerships with industry leaders like Apple, Nvidia, and Ford, proclaimed that this is the largest investment in foundational semiconductor manufacturing in the history of the United States. According to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, President Trump has prioritized increasing semiconductor manufacturing on American soil, especially for the foundational chips used in everyday electronics. Lutnick expressed that the partnership with Texas Instruments will significantly support U.S. chip production for many years ahead. This announcement is part of a broader trend of significant investments by American companies in U.S. manufacturing, spurred by the administration's call for tech industries to relocate more production domestically. Earlier this month, General Motors revealed plans for a $4 billion investment to boost U.S. operations, while Apple pledged $500 billion to enhance its facilities in the country. Additionally, in January, Oracle, OpenAI, and SoftBank announced a collaboration to establish a new company named Stargate, aimed at expanding AI infrastructure in the United States. Despite these initiatives, experts caution that manufacturing complex products like iPhones in the U.S. poses significant challenges, citing a lack of skilled labor and necessary components. Enhancing American manufacturing has been a central focus of the Trump administration, which has implemented tariffs on numerous foreign-made goods to stimulate job growth domestically. As part of these efforts, Trump Mobile is set to launch a new smartphone in September, claiming it will be proudly designed and built in the United States. Nevertheless, industry analysts remain skeptical about the feasibility of large-scale domestic production of advanced technology products. The race to maintain U.S. leadership in technology, particularly in artificial intelligence, remains a priority for the administration.
