Big Tech's AI data centers are pushing the power grid to its limits — and one state is feeling it the most

Texas is experiencing a remarkable surge in data center demand, leading to significant pressure on its power grid. With projections indicating that Texas could become the world’s leading data center hub by 2030—overtaking Virginia—the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has raised alarms. Just last week, ERCOT informed state regulators that power demand is anticipated to quadruple by 2032, largely fueled by a wave of large-scale data center projects eager to connect to the grid. This is not an isolated issue; the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), which oversees the grid for 15 states, is also bracing for a 35% increase in demand by 2035, driven predominantly by data center expansions in regions including Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois. While MISO's forecast signifies a noteworthy rise in demand, it pales in comparison to the unprecedented growth ERCOT is facing. The existing power infrastructure in Texas lacks the capacity to accommodate the explosive growth, resulting in data centers potentially facing delays of several years before they can be powered. In response, some developers have opted to bypass the grid entirely, choosing to construct their own on-site power plants, often utilizing natural gas. Projects like Oracle and OpenAI's Stargate data centers in Abilene and Shackelford County exemplify this trend. However, there remains uncertainty about whether all of the proposed data centers in Texas will be realized, as ERCOT has expressed concerns regarding the accuracy of the quadrupled demand forecast and plans to engage with regulators to assess the situation. Moreover, many data centers are also encountering challenges securing construction funding, further complicating their development amid this rapid expansion phase.
