A Texas judge has denied a request from Attorney General Ken Paxton to impose a temporary injunction preventing Kenvue, the manufacturer of Tylenol, from asserting that the pain and fever medication is safe for pregnant women and children during ongoing legal proceedings. The ruling, issued by District Judge LeAnn Rafferty in Panola County, also rejected Paxton's unusual demand to stop Kenvue from distributing $400 million in dividends to its shareholders later this month. These rulings represent early setbacks for Paxton in a politically sensitive case centered on unproven allegations that Tylenol may contribute to autism and other disorders. The controversial claim was initially popularized by former President Trump and health official Robert F. Kennedy Jr. During a peculiar press conference in September, Trump urged the public to refrain from using the medication. However, scientific evidence has not substantiated any link between Tylenol (acetaminophen) and autism or neurological disorders. While some studies have suggested a potential association, they are significantly flawed, and numerous others have found no such connection. In fact, Tylenol is widely regarded as one of the safest options for pain and fever relief during pregnancy, as untreated conditions can lead to increased risks, including autism. Despite this, Paxton filed the lawsuit on October 28, alleging that Kenvue and its former parent company, Johnson & Johnson, deliberately misled consumers by marketing Tylenol as safe while allegedly being aware of its supposed connection to autism and other health issues. The lawsuit aims to compel Kenvue to modify its marketing practices and seeks financial penalties, among other demands.
