Everything we know about Tesla's robotaxi launch in Austin

Tesla is set to debut its long-awaited robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, this weekend, but the journey may not be smooth. The electric vehicle giant, led by CEO Elon Musk, plans to roll out the driverless taxis on June 22, with the first autonomous ride from its factory to a customer’s home anticipated to occur on Musk's birthday, June 28. In a recent update on social media platform X, Musk announced the tentative launch details. Initially, a limited number of Tesla Model Y vehicles will be available for rides, rather than the CyberCab that was introduced last October. Access to these rides will be restricted to select invitees, with some social media influencers already reporting invitations for testing the service starting this Sunday. It’s important to note that rides will only take place within a designated geofenced area of the city. Musk has long envisioned a future of driverless robotaxis, and the pressure is mounting for him to fulfill this vision. Back in 2019, he expressed confidence that the robotaxi service would be operational by 2020. Recently, he confirmed plans to launch the service in Austin this month, with additional launches planned for Los Angeles and San Francisco. "Starting with a small fleet is a prudent approach to ensure everything runs smoothly before scaling up," Musk stated during an interview with CNBC. Industry analysts, like Dan Ives from Wedbush, view the introduction of robotaxis as a potential game-changer for Tesla, projecting that it could elevate the company’s market capitalization to over $2 trillion by next year. Ives noted that while challenges are inevitable, Tesla's unmatched global presence positions it to dominate the autonomous vehicle market and possibly license its technology to other manufacturers. However, Tesla's path to launching its robotaxi service is fraught with obstacles, including regulatory challenges and resistance from lawmakers. A coalition of Democratic lawmakers in Texas recently urged the company to postpone its launch until September 1, coinciding with the implementation of new self-driving regulations in the state. They emphasized that this delay would prioritize public safety and ensure compliance with upcoming laws. Public safety advocates have also voiced concerns, with a demonstration earlier this month highlighting the risks associated with Tesla's current autonomous driving software. The Dawn Project, a technology safety organization, showcased a Model Y equipped with the Full Self Driving software, which allegedly failed to recognize a stopped school bus, leading to a simulated accident with a child-sized mannequin. This incident has raised alarms about the safety of Tesla's FSD capabilities, which have been linked to several accidents, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
