Tesla Robotaxi fleet in Texas less than one-tenth size of Waymo's, filings reveal

Recent filings reveal that Tesla has received authorization for just 42 autonomous vehicles to operate as driverless ride-hailing options in Texas. This number is significantly smaller than Waymo's fleet, which boasts 577 approved robotaxis in the state. The data was made available through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, following the implementation of new legislation that enhances the state's oversight of commercial driverless vehicle services. The updated Texas law mandates that operators of autonomous vehicles, including prominent players like Tesla and Waymo, must self-certify their vehicles as level 4 autonomous, based on the standards set by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Level 4 autonomy allows vehicles to operate independently under typical conditions without the need for a human driver. While Waymo has established its fleet as level 4, Tesla claims that most of its vehicles feature level 2 driver assistance technologies. Since launching its Robotaxi service in Texas in June 2025, Tesla has yet to clarify how it certified any of its vehicles as level 4. In response to inquiries for clarification, the company has not provided any comments. As the electric vehicle market grows increasingly competitive, Tesla views driverless technology as a crucial element for future growth, especially as CEO Elon Musk aims to position the company at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence and robotics. In Texas, Tesla also faces competition from smaller firms like AV Ride, which has 317 authorized automated vehicles, and Amazon's Zoox with 35. Moreover, Tesla's Austin fleet has recorded 17 known incidents from July 2025 to April 2026, two of which resulted in minor injuries, one requiring hospitalization, all occurring with human safety supervisors onboard. Additionally, Tesla has sought permits for driverless testing in Arizona, Nevada, and Florida but has not yet launched paid driverless rides in those states. As the race for dominance in autonomous driving continues, Tesla's current standing highlights the challenges it faces against established competitors.
