Tesla loses bid to overturn $243M Autopilot verdict

In a significant legal development, a judge has rejected Tesla's appeal to overturn a staggering $243 million jury verdict linked to a deadly accident involving its Autopilot feature. The decision from Hon. Judge Beth Bloom emphasized that Tesla's arguments for relief mirrored those previously submitted during the trial and in their summary judgment briefings, all of which had already been dismissed by the court. The ruling highlighted the absence of new arguments or relevant legal precedents that would compel the court to reconsider its earlier findings or the jury's decision. The case stems from a tragic incident in 2019 in Florida, where a jury concluded that Tesla bore partial responsibility for a crash that resulted in the death of Naibel Benavides and left Dillon Angulo with severe injuries. In this verdict, the jury assigned two-thirds of the blame to the driver while attributing one-third to Tesla. It's noteworthy that punitive damages were solely levied against the automaker. Tesla's legal team contended that the driver was primarily at fault for the incident, seeking to have the ruling reversed based on this argument.
