Tesla is set to make its official entry into the Indian market with the inauguration of a new showroom in Mumbai next week. The highly anticipated event for the Tesla "Experience Center" is scheduled for July 15 at the Maker Maxity Mall, located in the bustling Bandra Kurla Complex. This showroom will not only showcase Tesla's impressive lineup of electric vehicles but is also expected to mark the company's first steps toward direct sales to Indian consumers. Tesla has been eyeing the Indian market for some time, and recent efforts indicate a strong commitment to establishing a presence in the country. In April, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk engaged in discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, exploring potential collaborations in technology and innovation. Meanwhile, Tesla's finance chief revealed that the company has been meticulous in planning its entry into this promising market. Currently, Tesla lacks manufacturing facilities in India, which means that vehicles will initially be imported from existing production hubs like Shanghai, China, and Berlin, Germany. As the company prepares to launch, it will face competition from established players, including Chinese rival BYD and domestic manufacturer Tata Motors. A significant hurdle for Tesla is India's import duties on electric vehicles, which are approximately 70%. The Indian government has attempted to attract foreign investment by offering a reduced duty of 15% for companies willing to invest $500 million and establish local manufacturing. Despite the incentives, reports indicate that Tesla may not be interested in setting up manufacturing in India, as stated by HD Kumaraswamy, India's minister for heavy industries. Meanwhile, Tesla is actively recruiting for various positions in Mumbai, including showroom advisors, security personnel, data collection vehicle operators for its Autopilot feature, and service technicians. Job openings have also been posted in New Delhi for store managers, although plans for a showroom in the capital remain unclear.
