The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology following reports of safety violations. Allegations have surfaced indicating that the software may have caused vehicles to run red lights or veer into oncoming traffic. This investigation marks a significant step, as it is one of the first to specifically target Tesla's FSD driver assistance feature. According to the NHTSA, over 50 reports of such violations have been documented, with four incidents resulting in injuries. This inquiry comes on the heels of a previous investigation launched in October 2024 concerning crashes that occurred in low visibility. Earlier this year, the NHTSA closed an investigation into Tesla's Autopilot system, which was linked to 13 fatal accidents due to its misuse. Another investigation regarding Tesla's fixes for Autopilot is still pending. The timing of this new probe coincides with the release of Tesla's latest FSD software version, which CEO Elon Musk has eagerly promoted. This update is designed to utilize training data from Tesla's ongoing robotaxi pilot program in Austin, Texas. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) reported that it has received at least 18 complaints and a media report claiming the FSD software failed to halt at red lights or remained stationary as required. Additionally, ODI has documented six reports from Tesla under its Standing General Order for Crash Reporting, which mandates that companies disclose information about incidents involving autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles. They have collaborated with the Maryland Transportation Authority to assess whether reported red light violations are consistent, noting that several incidents occurred at the same intersection in Joppa, Maryland. Tesla has reportedly taken measures to rectify the issues at this particular location. The ODI also outlined instances where FSD engaged in unsafe maneuvers, such as entering opposing lanes or crossing double-yellow lines without proper warning. Furthermore, the investigation includes reports of Teslas proceeding through intersections from incorrect lanes or making improper turns despite clear signage. As part of its preliminary evaluation, ODI is exploring the safety implications of the FSD software. Typically, these investigations are completed within eight months, although the timeline could be impacted by the current federal government shutdown. Earlier this year, cuts were made to the NHTSA's vehicle automation safety team, a move that has raised concerns about oversight in this critical area.
