Tesla FSD: Other European regulators skeptical despite Dutch approval

In the wake of a significant shareholder vote last year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk's immense fortune has become closely tied to the success of the company's Full Self-Driving (FSD) subscriptions. Recently, the Dutch vehicle regulator RDW granted approval for FSD to operate on its roads, paving the way for Tesla to seek similar endorsements across the European Union. This could potentially unlock a market of 450 million consumers for Tesla’s driver assistance technology. However, the journey ahead is not without challenges. A recent report from Reuters highlights the skepticism Tesla faces from other regulatory bodies across Europe. As Musk aims to secure all 423.7 million shares included in his new contract—valued at approximately $1.7 trillion—he must attract at least 10 million FSD subscribers over the next decade. Achieving such ambitious targets necessitates support not only from North America but also from Europe and China. The regulatory landscape in Europe and China differs significantly from that in the United States, where the government typically places trust in companies like Tesla regarding product safety. In contrast, European and Chinese authorities enforce stricter premarket approval processes before allowing new technologies on public roads. Notably, there are key differences between the FSD systems in Europe and the U.S. For instance, the Dutch-approved version operates more conservatively, necessitating frequent monitoring of the human driver and requiring them to be ready to take control at any moment. In the U.S., however, drivers are permitted to disengage from the wheel on highways, and the system currently does not align with UN R-171 regulations. Additionally, certain features, such as summon functionality, are not yet available in the European version, and it is not intended for use in most urban environments.
