Tesla has officially commenced production of its highly anticipated Cybercab robotaxi model. On Friday, CEO Elon Musk shared a video on X, showcasing multiple Cybercab units emerging from the production line at the Austin facility. The footage, captured from within the vehicles, offers a glimpse into the manufacturing process and signals that Tesla is progressing toward making the Cybercab a reality. Designed specifically for autonomous operation, the two-door, two-seat Cybercab is a key component of Tesla's ambitious strategy to transition from traditional car sales to a business centered around AI-driven robotaxis and robotics. Just over a month ago, Tesla announced the completion of its first production Cybercab, and the recent videos indicate that several units have now been manufactured, with Musk also sharing clips showing Cybercabs navigating public streets. However, the journey ahead involves significant challenges. While the start of production is promising, Tesla is yet to achieve fully autonomous driving capabilities at scale. During a recent earnings call, the company omitted specific timelines for launching robotaxis in five new cities. In contrast, rivals like Waymo have already established driverless ride-hailing services in various locations. Nevertheless, the new footage reflects progress for a vehicle Musk has noted would face an 'agonizingly slow' ramp-up. Tesla has not yet responded to requests for further comments regarding the Cybercab's development.
