Elon Musk's Tesla Robotaxi launches in Austin: Here's how much each ride costs

Tesla has officially introduced its long-awaited driverless Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of autonomous transportation. This groundbreaking development took place over the weekend, allowing Tesla vehicles to transport paying passengers without any human drivers onboard—a moment that CEO Elon Musk described as the culmination of a decade's worth of effort. Initially, the Robotaxi service is being launched to a select group of social media influencers and content creators, who will have the opportunity to experience this technology firsthand. Each ride comes at a flat rate of $4.20, providing an affordable option for those eager to test the future of mobility. Currently, the pilot program is confined to a specific geofenced area of Austin and operates daily from 6 a.m. to midnight. Although the service appears to be fully autonomous, Tesla has implemented a safety monitoring system, with a designated safety overseer present in the front seat during these early rides. The fleet comprises approximately 10 to 20 modified Tesla Model Y vehicles, which are being closely monitored. Musk announced that the AI chip and software that power the Robotaxi have been developed entirely in-house at Tesla. However, the launch comes amid heightened regulatory scrutiny, particularly after Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently signed legislation requiring autonomous vehicle operators to secure a state permit. This law, set to take effect on September 1, introduces stricter compliance measures, including mandatory safety protocols and adherence to Level 4 autonomy standards, which stipulate that vehicles must function without human intervention in defined situations. Tesla is entering a competitive landscape in Austin, with rivals such as Waymo, which has partnered with Uber for ride-hailing, and Amazon-backed Zoox, currently conducting autonomous vehicle trials. While Musk has expressed intentions to expand the Robotaxi service to additional U.S. cities in the future, a definitive public rollout plan has yet to be revealed.
