Employees within Tesla's AI departments are bracing for what has been described as the most challenging year yet, according to Ashok Elluswamy, the company's VP of AI software. During a recent all-hands meeting attended by members of Tesla's Autopilot and Optimus teams, Elluswamy emphasized that 2026 will serve as a significant litmus test for the automaker's ambitious objectives. The meeting, described by attendees as a motivational session, featured leadership from the AI division outlining aggressive timelines for the production of the Optimus humanoid robot and the rollout of Tesla's Robotaxi service. As Tesla accelerates its efforts to introduce Robotaxis across the country and enhance the production of its humanoid robots, these projects stand as pivotal elements in CEO Elon Musk's strategic vision. Musk previously indicated during an earnings call in October that the company aims to launch its Robotaxi service in eight to ten major metropolitan areas by the end of 2025, with a target of having over a thousand vehicles in operation by year-end. The Optimus robot production is anticipated to commence toward late 2026, with Musk acknowledging that ramping up to an annual output of one million units will be a gradual process, dependent on numerous variables. Notably, Tesla shareholders recently approved a compensation package for Musk that could position him as the world's first trillionaire. This package includes challenging targets for the Robotaxi and Optimus projects, such as deploying one million Robotaxis on public roads and manufacturing one million humanoid robots. The Autopilot division, long recognized as a top priority within Tesla, operates with a level of secrecy, maintaining a distinct separation from other engineering teams. Reports suggest that the Autopilot team puts in extensive hours and has weekly meetings with Musk, fostering a highly focused work environment. Since taking over leadership of the Optimus team earlier this year, Elluswamy has pivoted the team's strategy to utilize more camera-focused methodologies, akin to those used in Tesla's Full Self-Driving software development. Musk has been actively involved with the Optimus team, holding regular discussions that sometimes extend into the late hours. As 2026 approaches, the pressure mounts on Tesla's AI teams to meet the ambitious goals set forth by their leadership and the company as a whole.
