Tesla revamps the Megapack in attempt to reverse its declining storage business

In a strategic move to revitalize its energy storage division, Tesla has introduced the upgraded Megapack 3, aiming to attract utilities and data center developers in need of reliable power solutions. Unveiled recently, the Megapack 3 boasts the capability to store approximately 1 megawatt-hour more electricity than its predecessor, along with an extended lifespan that could appeal to potential clients. Additionally, Tesla has launched the Megablock, which combines four Megapack 3 units to provide a total storage capacity of 20 megawatt-hours. This configuration is designed to supply power to around 4,000 homes for four hours—matching the typical duration of battery usage. The new grouping is expected to enhance efficiency by reducing installation times by 23% and construction times by up to 40%. Sourcing for the battery cells will come from the United States, Southeast Asia, and China. The Megapack 3 features an upgraded thermal management system, allowing it to function in extreme temperatures ranging from -40°F to 140°F, making it suitable for deployment in various climates around the globe. However, the financial benefits of these innovations may not be seen immediately, as production at Tesla's Megafactory near Houston is not set to commence until the latter half of 2026. This comes at a crucial time for Tesla's energy storage sector, which has experienced two consecutive quarters of declining performance this year. Despite being the leading provider of battery energy storage systems in 2024, its market share has been shrinking, according to Wood Mackenzie. The new facility aims to produce up to 50 gigawatt-hours annually of Megapack 3 and Megablock units. In the last quarter, Tesla managed to install 9.6 gigawatt-hours of stationary energy storage. Interestingly, Tesla's solar and energy storage ventures might have a ready customer in CEO Elon Musk’s other enterprise, xAI, which has recently incorporated 168 Megapacks at its South Memphis data center, although it is reportedly considering additional gas turbines for power generation.
