In a significant shift, Tesla will exclusively offer its Full Self-Driving (FSD) driver assistance software through a monthly subscription, as announced by CEO Elon Musk. This change, set to take effect on February 14, marks a departure from the traditional model where customers could pay a one-time fee for access to FSD. Historically, Tesla’s pricing for the FSD suite has varied, with the highest upfront cost reaching $15,000 in 2022, later dropping to $8,000. The company introduced a subscription option in 2021 for $199 per month, which was reduced to $99 this year. Musk has previously encouraged customers to opt for the outright purchase, suggesting that FSD prices would soar as new features were added. The move to a subscription-only model appears to be a strategic response to lower-than-expected adoption rates. As of October 2025, only 12% of Tesla customers had subscribed to FSD, according to Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja. By lowering the initial cost and shifting to a subscription format, Tesla aims to increase user uptake, particularly as the company anticipates a challenging first quarter. Additionally, this transition aligns with Musk’s objectives tied to his ambitious $1 trillion pay package, which includes a target of achieving "10 million active FSD subscriptions" by late 2035. The subscription approach could also serve as a legal safeguard amid ongoing litigation concerning misleading marketing practices related to FSD and Autopilot. Tesla has faced scrutiny for its claims regarding the capabilities of its vehicles, with a court ruling in December highlighting deceptive marketing practices that could lead to licensing issues in California. By eliminating the option to purchase FSD outright, Tesla may be aiming to limit potential liabilities from lawsuits related to these unfulfilled promises. Despite the controversies, Tesla’s FSD remains the most advanced driver-assistance software available in the U.S. However, competition is intensifying, with companies like Rivian, Ford, and General Motors developing their own systems to keep pace with Tesla's innovations. As the automotive landscape evolves, Tesla will need to navigate both customer expectations and regulatory challenges to maintain its position in the market.
