Tesla partners with Electrify Expo to launch full-weekend EV test drives

Electrify Expo, known for its festivals promoting electric vehicles across the United States, is set to introduce an innovative test drive experience allowing participants to take an electric vehicle home for an entire weekend. Tesla is the first automaker to collaborate on this initiative, with Electrify Expo CEO BJ Birtwell indicating that more brands are expected to join soon. Birtwell explained that this program presents a chance for attendees to engage with an EV in a relaxed, pressure-free environment. They can integrate the vehicle into their daily lives, running errands, and determining if it suits their needs. This hands-on experience is particularly crucial, as driving an electric vehicle for the first time has proven to sway many consumers away from traditional internal combustion engines. Consumer interest in such experiences is significant; a recent survey by Consumer Reports revealed that about half of U.S. consumers are eager to test-drive an electric vehicle. The inaugural “Electrify Weekender” will kick off at the Los Angeles festival starting June 21, with Birtwell aiming to refine the program before it expands to other cities, including Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and Dallas. For Tesla, this initiative could be vital in connecting with potential buyers who may be hesitant or unfamiliar with the brand. As the company faces challenges from increased competition and a shifting public perception, the Electrify Weekender may provide a strategic opportunity to attract new customers. Although Tesla did not provide comments on the program, Birtwell emphasized that this new offering builds on the festival’s longstanding commitment to facilitating EV demonstrations. Previously, these demos were brief, lasting around 8 to 10 minutes, yet they have been instrumental in converting attendees into EV buyers. Birtwell likened the festival experience to a modern auto mall, where attendees can explore various electric vehicles and make informed purchasing decisions. While traditional auto dealerships often create a sense of urgency around extended test drives, Birtwell envisions Electrify Expo as a neutral ground that alleviates this pressure. He anticipates that thousands of attendees will take advantage of this unique opportunity, emphasizing the need to engage a broader audience, particularly those who are curious yet skeptical about electric vehicles.
