Tesla’s battle with the California Department of Motor Vehicles isn’t over after all

Tesla has initiated legal proceedings against the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in an effort to challenge a recent agency decision. The DMV ruled that Tesla engaged in misleading marketing practices by exaggerating the autonomous driving capabilities of its vehicles, which they deemed a violation of state regulations. This lawsuit comes on the heels of a situation that seemed to have reached a resolution just a week prior. At that time, the DMV announced it would not suspend Tesla's sales and manufacturing licenses for a duration of 30 days after the electric vehicle manufacturer complied with the ruling. Tesla ceased using the term 'Autopilot' in its marketing efforts within California, a move aimed at aligning with the DMV's requirements. Despite the potential for the DMV to impose harsher penalties, including the suspension of Tesla's licenses, the agency opted for a more lenient approach. An administrative law judge had supported the DMV's recommendation for a 30-day suspension, yet the regulator ultimately provided Tesla with 60 days to comply. In a significant shift, Tesla not only stopped using the term 'Autopilot' but also fully discontinued the feature in the U.S. and Canada as of January. This abrupt change raises questions about whether Tesla may now regret its decision and is seeking to reinstate the feature.
