Tesla reports 480,126 vehicle deliveries for second quarter, topping expectation

In a significant turnaround, Tesla has reported that it delivered 480,126 vehicles in the second quarter, exceeding analyst expectations of around 406,600 deliveries. This surge in numbers comes as the electric vehicle manufacturer aims to recover from a series of annual sales declines. Last year during the same period, Tesla managed approximately 384,000 deliveries, while the first quarter of 2026 saw 358,023 vehicles delivered. Although the company does not disclose specific delivery figures by region or model, the popular Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUVs accounted for a staggering 467,762 of the total deliveries. The company has faced challenges, including a dip in consumer interest partly attributed to Elon Musk's controversial public persona and the loss of a U.S. federal tax credit for EV buyers. The competitive landscape has also intensified, with Chinese manufacturers like BYD and Nio entering the market with cost-effective and advanced electric vehicles, alongside competition from South Korean and European carmakers. To combat these challenges, Tesla has introduced lower-cost versions of both the Model 3 and Model Y. Additionally, they have rolled out their Full Self-Driving driver assistance systems in select European markets, potentially boosting sales amid rising gas prices due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. However, as oil prices stabilize, U.S. consumers appear to be shifting their preferences back toward hybrid vehicles rather than fully electric ones, as noted by industry experts. Looking ahead, Tesla faces hurdles including inflation, supply chain issues, and the rising cost of essential components. Under Musk's direction, Tesla is also concentrating on ramping up production of its Semi electric trucks and launching its autonomous Cybercab. Furthermore, the company plans to begin manufacturing its Optimus humanoid robots, indicating a shift in its vehicle portfolio towards fully autonomous solutions. In the energy sector, Tesla reported deploying 13.5 GWh of solar and battery storage systems in the second quarter, exceeding analyst projections. Meanwhile, Musk's SpaceX, which owns xAI, purchased $269 million worth of Tesla's Megapacks to help reduce energy costs for its data centers. As of the latest market close, Tesla's stock has decreased by about 5% this year, contrasting with a 12% rise in the Nasdaq index.
