Tesla is refocusing its efforts on the development of AI chips specifically designed for inference tasks, as announced by CEO Elon Musk. This decision comes on the heels of reports that Musk has disbanded the in-house Dojo supercomputer team, which was originally dedicated to processing large volumes of data for autonomous driving software. According to a report from Bloomberg News, the Dojo team's leader, Peter Bannon, has left the company, signaling a significant shift in Tesla's strategy. Musk did not respond to a request for comments but took to social media to clarify the company's direction, stating that splitting resources between different AI chip designs is not practical. Musk emphasized that the upcoming Tesla AI5 and AI6 chips will excel in inference tasks while also being capable of training. This streamlined focus aims to bolster Tesla's competitive edge in AI-driven self-driving technology and robotics. As the company navigates a challenging market, marked by increased competition and shifting consumer sentiments, this redirection aligns with Musk's broader integration strategy across his various tech ventures. Tesla has faced considerable restructuring over the past year, including executive turnover and significant job cuts. Musk's vision includes deploying future AI inference chips, such as the AI6, in self-driving vehicles and the Optimus humanoid robots, promising substantial computational power for various AI applications. Reports indicate that the Dojo team has recently experienced a reduction in personnel, with approximately 20 members transitioning to a new venture, DensityAI. The remaining team members are being reassigned to other projects within Tesla, further illustrating the company's agile response to evolving technological demands.
