Tesla's China sales climb in the first two months of 2026 while BYD numbers drop

Tesla has experienced a significant boost in its electric vehicle sales in China during the initial two months of 2026, marking a recovery in competition against local rival BYD. According to the latest data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), sales of Tesla's China-manufactured electric vehicles surged by over 35%, reaching 127,728 units compared to 93,926 units in the same period last year. This increase takes into account the seasonal slowdown due to the Chinese New Year festivities, which occurred in mid-February. The sales performance of Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory, which produces popular models such as the Model 3 and Model Y for both domestic and international markets, now ranks just behind BYD. Last year, BYD surpassed Tesla to become the world's largest seller of electric vehicles on a calendar-year basis for the first time, but Tesla's recent figures indicate that demand for its vehicles remains robust. Notably, Tesla's sales in China are still more than double those of its nearest competitor, Leapmotor. Further insights from Reuters revealed that new registrations for Tesla vehicles also saw a significant rise across Europe in February, with most of these vehicles exported from the Shanghai facility. However, analysts suggest that Tesla still has a long way to go to close the gap with BYD's substantial lead in both domestic and international sales. BYD recently gained attention with the introduction of its innovative Blade battery, which can reportedly charge from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes, addressing common concerns about electric vehicle battery range. Additionally, BYD's expanding global presence has solidified its dominance, achieving over 1 million units in overseas sales in 2025, a feat that domestic competitors cannot easily match, as noted by Leon Cheng, a mobility expert at YCP. Chinese automakers are becoming increasingly competitive, offering a diverse range of features at lower prices, which is impacting sales for both BYD and Tesla. February data showed that Geely's Xingyuan emerged as the top-selling car model in China, surpassing both Tesla and BYD's offerings. Additionally, Xiaomi's YU7 SUV took the lead over Tesla's Model Y the month prior. The CPCA has indicated that finalized sales figures for March could provide a clearer picture of the electric vehicle market's trajectory. They anticipate a rapid month-on-month growth in production and sales as the industry rebounds from the Spring Festival holiday. March is also a pivotal month for new product launches, with numerous manufacturers expected to unveil new models.
