Tesla sales grew by 6% in Q1, but company has an overproduction problem

This morning, Tesla released its production and delivery figures for the first quarter of 2026, revealing a mix of positive growth and concerning inventory challenges. The electric vehicle manufacturer produced an impressive total of 408,386 vehicles, marking a 12.6% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The majority of these vehicles were the popular Models 3 and Y, with 394,611 units manufactured—an increase of 14.2% year-over-year. In terms of sales, Tesla also saw growth, with total electric vehicle sales reaching 358,023, which is a 6.3% rise from Q1 2025. However, this increase in sales is only half of the production growth, leading to increased inventory levels. Specifically, sales for the Models 3 and Y rose by 5.6% year-over-year, totaling 341,893 units sold. Despite this, Tesla faces the challenge of having about 50,000 additional cars in stock. Sales of other models, including the Cybertruck, Model S, and Model X, experienced a significant downturn, dropping by 19.7% year-over-year to just 13,775 units sold. Adding to the mixed results, Tesla's energy storage division, which has been a consistent area of growth, also reported a decline. The company managed to deploy only 8.8 GWh of energy storage in Q1, down 15% from the same quarter last year. Overall, both vehicle deliveries and energy storage deployments fell short of analysts' expectations, highlighting the hurdles Tesla must navigate as it scales its production capabilities.
