Tesla has reached a settlement regarding a lawsuit linked to a tragic accident in 2023 involving a vehicle equipped with its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. The details of the settlement remain undisclosed, as reported by Bloomberg. The lawsuit was initiated by the daughter of Johna Story, a 71-year-old victim who was struck by a Tesla Model Y. The incident occurred when Story exited her vehicle to aid in directing traffic around a prior crash exacerbated by sun glare. Following the accident, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an investigation into Tesla's FSD system in 2024, focusing on four similar crashes reported under low visibility conditions, including the incident involving Story. The NHTSA aimed to determine whether the automated driving software could effectively recognize and appropriately react to compromised roadway visibility caused by factors like sun glare, fog, or airborne dust. In March 2026, this investigation escalated to an engineering analysis, where the agency expressed concerns that Tesla's degradation detection system, both in its initial deployment and subsequent updates, might not adequately warn drivers under adverse visibility conditions. While this settlement resolves the family's lawsuit, the NHTSA's investigation remains active, posing potential repercussions for Tesla, including the possibility of a vehicle recall. Additionally, another investigation into the FSD system was initiated by the federal agency in October 2025, prompted by reports of the software causing vehicles to run red lights or veer into opposing lanes.
