Tesla files new ‘Robotaxi’ trademark applications after prior attempt stalls

Tesla has taken a significant step by submitting new trademark applications for the name "Tesla Robotaxi," following previous challenges in securing trademarks for its upcoming self-driving transport service. The electric vehicle manufacturer initially sought trademarks for the terms "Robotaxi" and "Cybercab" in October 2024. However, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently informed Tesla that additional details were necessary to proceed with the trademark for "Robotaxi," a name already in use by several competitors, including Waymo. Furthermore, the USPTO has halted the application for "Cybercab" entirely due to the overwhelming number of companies trying to trademark variations of the term "Cyber." In response, Tesla has filed three new applications focusing on the more distinct phrase "Tesla Robotaxi" as it gears up for testing in Austin, Texas, later this month. The company aims to secure these trademarks to cover its forthcoming autonomous ride-hailing service, the associated mobile app, and the vehicles themselves. However, it is unlikely that the trademark applications will be processed in time for the upcoming tests, as such applications typically take several months before being assigned to an examiner. Additionally, Tesla has pending applications for trademarks on terms like "Robobus," "Robus," and "Cyberbus," which appear to be linked to a van-like concept vehicle unveiled last October, when the Cybercab prototype was introduced. During that presentation, CEO Elon Musk referred to this vehicle as the "Robovan," although the term is already trademarked by Estonian robotic delivery firm Starship.
