In a significant move to enhance its battery supply chain, Tesla has announced a partnership with LG Energy Solutions (LGES) for the supply of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells. This agreement, valued at an impressive $4.3 billion, marks a crucial step in Tesla's ongoing efforts to diversify its battery sourcing amidst fluctuating market conditions. Historically, Tesla has relied primarily on Panasonic for its battery cells, while also utilizing LFP cells from CATL, known for their affordability and durability. However, the new contract with LGES, as reported by The Korea Economic Daily, is set to commence in August 2024 and extend until at least July 2030, with options for further extensions if necessary. Though these LFP cells are not expected to power Tesla's electric vehicles, they are likely intended for the company’s energy storage solutions. This move comes at a time when electric vehicle sales are facing challenges in North America, and both Tesla and LGES are optimistic about the demand for energy storage products. Additionally, this partnership allows Tesla to lessen its dependence on Chinese suppliers, as LGES will manufacture the cells at its facility in Michigan. This strategic decision means that these components will avoid the tariffs imposed during the Trump administration that affect imports from China. Despite Tesla CEO Elon Musk's ambitious forecasts for the energy storage sector, its current contribution to the company's revenue has been modest, even declining in the last financial quarter.
