Tesla adding Grok AI chatbot to its cars in the UK, Europe amid regulatory probes

Tesla Europe has revealed its intentions to integrate Grok, an AI chatbot developed by xAI, into the infotainment systems of its vehicles across the UK and eight other European markets. This move comes at a time when Tesla is facing challenges, as the company experienced a significant 27% drop in electric vehicle sales in Europe, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA). Despite the ongoing popularity of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Europe, which accounted for 17.4% of the market in 2025, Tesla's sales have slumped. Competitors like BYD from China have gained traction with innovative and more affordable EV options. Factors contributing to Tesla's decline include a lack of new budget-friendly models and a consumer backlash against Elon Musk's political statements, which some perceive as controversial. The integration of chatbot technology is not exclusive to Tesla; Volvo is also planning to introduce a Google Gemini-based conversational AI assistant in its EX60 electric vehicles. In a recent earnings report, Tesla disclosed that it had invested $2 billion into Musk's xAI, which was later acquired by SpaceX in a stock transaction valued at $1.25 trillion. xAI has also faced scrutiny from regulators in various regions, including Europe and Australia, particularly due to Grok's controversial capabilities, such as generating explicit deepfake images without consent. Concerns have been raised about Grok's safety measures. A Tesla owner in Canada reported alarming interactions with the AI, highlighting its inappropriate responses to her son—a situation that has prompted questions regarding the protection of minors using the chatbot. Neither Tesla nor xAI have clarified whether they can restrict access to Grok for younger users or ensure that its responses are suitable for all ages. Safety experts are wary of the potential distractions posed by the integration of chatbots into vehicles. Mike Nelson, an automotive safety researcher, pointed out that while he enjoys using Grok in his own Tesla Model Y, the technology could create additional distractions for drivers. Research indicates that phone conversations, even in hands-free mode, can divert attention from the road. Furthermore, Rayid Ghani, a machine learning professor at Carnegie Mellon University, emphasized the need for thorough evaluations to understand the impact of chatbots on driving behavior and safety, calling for industry-wide benchmarks and standards. As Tesla navigates these challenges, the company has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the implementation and safety of the Grok chatbot in its vehicles.
