Tesla's sales in Europe have experienced a dramatic drop, marking the seventh consecutive month of declining registration figures. In July, the company recorded just 8,837 new vehicle registrations, which represents a staggering 40% decrease compared to the same month last year, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA). In a striking contrast, Chinese automaker BYD has witnessed a remarkable rise, with 13,503 new registrations in July, reflecting a remarkable 225% increase year-on-year. This surge comes at a time when the overall sales of battery electric vehicles in Europe continue to rise, indicating that Tesla's troubles are not due to a lack of consumer interest in electric cars. Tesla's challenges in the European market stem from a combination of intensified competition and tarnished brand reputation, partly due to CEO Elon Musk's controversial statements and his ties to the previous U.S. administration. The company has also faced global headwinds, as evidenced by a decline in auto sales revenue during the second quarter. Musk has cautioned that the company may experience several more difficult quarters ahead. One of the critical issues for Tesla is the absence of a significant refresh in its vehicle lineup. Earlier this year, the automaker announced plans for a more affordable electric vehicle, with hopes to begin volume production in the latter half of 2025. Investors are optimistic that this new model could help revitalize sales. However, the competitive landscape is tough, with Chinese manufacturers, particularly BYD, aggressively entering the European market. BYD has opened numerous showrooms across the continent and offers competitive pricing for its vehicles, which has contributed to its rising market share. Data from JATO Dynamics revealed that Chinese brands achieved a record market share exceeding 5% in the first half of the year. Additionally, Tesla is not the only company feeling the pressure; other automakers such as Stellantis, Hyundai Group, and Toyota have also reported year-on-year declines in new car registrations in Europe for July. In contrast, brands like Volkswagen, BMW, and Renault Group have seen positive growth in new registrations during the same period.
