Tesla Q2 2025: Sell fewer cars and carbon credits, make less money

Tesla has released its financial report for the second quarter of 2025, revealing another challenging period for the electric vehicle manufacturer. The surge in competition within the EV sector has left Tesla struggling, hindered by an aging model lineup and recent controversies surrounding CEO Elon Musk that have tarnished the brand's once-glowing reputation. Sales figures indicate a concerning trend, with a 13% decline year-over-year for Q2 2025. The financial results highlight an even steeper drop in automotive revenue, which fell by 16% to $16.7 billion compared to the previous year. This decline underscores the mounting pressure from rival automakers that have entered the electric vehicle market. Tesla's battery division, previously viewed as a key growth sector, is also feeling the financial squeeze. The energy generation and storage segment reported revenues of $2.8 billion, marking a 7% decrease from the same quarter in 2024. Additionally, revenues from carbon credits—government-issued permits that allow other automakers to exceed pollution limits—plummeted by more than half, down to $490 million. As more competitors launch their own EVs, the necessity for these credits from Tesla diminishes. Looking ahead, it appears that this subsidy, which has historically helped Tesla stay profitable, may contribute even less in the future as U.S. environmental regulations are rolled back. The combination of these factors presents a significant challenge for Tesla as it navigates an increasingly crowded market.
