Tesla Autopilot plaintiffs seek $345 million in damages over fatal crash in Florida

Tesla is currently embroiled in a pivotal personal injury trial regarding a deadly crash linked to its Autopilot system, marking a significant moment as it is the first time the company has stood trial in federal court over such allegations. On Thursday, plaintiff attorneys requested a staggering $345 million in damages, which breaks down to $109 million in compensatory damages and $236 million in punitive damages. This trial, which commenced on July 14 in the Southern District of Florida, revolves around a tragic incident that took place in 2019 in Key Largo, Florida. The case focuses on the actions of George McGee, the driver of a Tesla Model S who was engaged with the vehicle's Enhanced Autopilot at the time of the incident. McGee reportedly dropped his mobile phone and attempted to retrieve it while driving over 60 mph, mistakenly believing that the Autopilot would automatically brake for obstacles. As he sped through an intersection, he collided with an empty parked car and its owners, resulting in the tragic death of 22-year-old Naibel Benavides. Her body was found approximately 75 feet from the crash site. Her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo, survived but suffered severe injuries, including multiple fractures and a traumatic brain injury. The plaintiffs, which include Benavides' family and Angulo, are seeking compensation for wrongful death, pain and suffering, and medical expenses. They argue that Tesla's Autopilot system had inherent flaws that the company should have identified and rectified. Additionally, they claim that Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk, misrepresented the safety capabilities of Autopilot, leading drivers to over-rely on the system. Throughout the trial, the plaintiffs' legal team highlighted Musk's previous statements regarding the technology's safety and efficacy. In response, Tesla's attorneys contended that the company had adequately informed customers on the proper use of Autopilot and that McGee's negligence was the primary cause of the crash. They asserted that a verdict against Tesla could create a misleading perception about the company's commitment to driver safety. Previously, the Benavides family had settled a lawsuit with McGee, who had faced charges of careless driving in connection with the incident. Notably, Judge Beth Bloom allowed this case to proceed to trial, indicating that there exists sufficient evidence for a jury to consider Tesla's potential recklessness in prioritizing product development over safety. During the closing arguments, members of the Benavides family and Angulo were present in the courtroom, visibly affected as graphic evidence related to the crash was presented. This case represents a critical juncture in the discussion surrounding autonomous vehicle safety and manufacturer accountability.
