Tesla is expanding its recall of Powerwall 2 home batteries in the United States, affecting over 10,000 units. This decision follows reports of nearly two dozen incidents involving the batteries overheating, emitting smoke, or igniting. This U.S. recall comes on the heels of a similar action taken in Australia earlier this year, where multiple Powerwall 2 batteries were also recalled due to fire hazards. In that instance, the faulty battery cells were sourced from an unnamed third-party manufacturer. Tesla has yet to disclose the identity of the supplier for the batteries involved in the U.S. recall. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there have been five confirmed fires linked to the Powerwall units, resulting in minor property damage. Additionally, six units emitted smoke and another eleven overheated without igniting. Electrek was the first to report on these developments, and the CPSC has now posted a formal recall notice on its website. The affected Powerwalls were sold between November 2020 and December 2022. The CPSC is advising consumers to check whether their devices are online and to use the Tesla app to see if their unit is part of the recall. Tesla has stated that it will remotely discharge the affected batteries and will provide replacements for those impacted.
