Tesla pushes back on Autopilot narrative after fatal Texas crash

A tragic crash over the weekend, where a Tesla crashed into a brick home in Katy, Texas, resulting in the death of a 76-year-old woman, has reignited concerns regarding the company's self-driving technology. The accident took place on Friday night when a Tesla Model 3, driven by Michael Butler, veered off the road and struck the residence of Martha Avila. She was airlifted to a hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries. Butler reportedly informed authorities that the vehicle was operating on Autopilot at the time of the incident. This claim rapidly gained traction, sparking renewed discussions around Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features. However, Tesla, known for its unconventional public relations approach, responded vigorously to these claims on Monday. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s director of Autopilot software and a key figure since the team's inception in 2014, took to social media platform X to present a contrasting narrative based on data analysis. He stated, "In this case, the driver manually overrode self-driving by pressing the accelerator all the way to 100% of the accel pedal in this residential area," and added that the vehicle reached a speed of 73 mph during the crash, with the accelerator still engaged post-impact. Elon Musk echoed this perspective on his X account, asserting, "This [allegation] makes no sense. FSD drives slowly through neighborhood streets and this was a high-speed crash!" Meanwhile, federal regulators have announced an investigation into the incident. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated a special crash investigation, marking this as part of an ongoing series of over 40 inquiries into Tesla crashes involving advanced driver-assistance systems. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that it will forward its findings to the local district attorney to assess whether any criminal charges should be pursued. The determination of whether the Autopilot system was active, overridden, or malfunctioning remains to be seen as investigators analyze the vehicle’s data logs.
